Abstract:

Written by Osman Nuri Eralp, a veterinarian and bacteriologist, and published in 1918, Are There Alive Creatures in Other Worlds? 101 years after its first publication, the work was able to find the opportunity to meet today's readers for the first time in 2019 in Latin letters. It is possible to divide this short work of Eralp into three parts. The first chapter, titled "The Problem of Life on the Earth and the Planets", tries to give scientific answers to the question of whether there is life in other worlds, which is the main subject of the book. In the second part of the work, the author deals with the planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn-Uranus-Neptune) and presents scientific data of the period such as the distance, diameter, density, volume, mass, gravity of these planets to the earth, while on the other hand, the dream of life on the planets. His workincludes depictions, creatures, giant plants and animals. The last part of the work is titled "The Earth and the End of Life in These Worlds" and after a summary about the planets and the Sun mentioned earlier, futuristic interpretations are given. The work has neither a fictional structure nor the feature of being the first in the Ottoman Scientific Roman tradition. Therefore, the work cannot go beyond being a "guide to imaginary planets". Nevertheless, it is undoubtedly a remarkable text in that it touches on topics such as extraterrestrials, superior technology, the idea of advanced civilization, imagination of the future, and reflects the scientific understanding of its time.
