Abstract:

Nutrition, as a fundamental requirement of humanity, has led to the emergence of culinary culture within societies. Surrounding this culture, many social practices, including religious and national elements, have developed. Festivals are also among these social practices. In 2015, Gaziantep was designated as the ninth city of gastronomy globally and the first in Turkey within the scope of UNESCOs Creative Cities Network Program. Gazianteps initiatives to become a city of gastronomy were approached through the lens of the International Antep Pistachio Festival, held between 2006-2017. In 2018, the International Antep Pistachio Festival was replaced by the more comprehensive International Gaziantep Gastronomy Festival, which aligns with UNESCOs ideals. However, this festival, which has continued to be held since 2018, was not included in this study due to its scope limitations. Press releases from the press unit of the Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality were analysed, and the data obtained were assessed descriptively to determine the extent to which gastronomy was integrated into the festival before and after 2015. Additionally, the festivals contributions to promotion, sustainability, and preservation, as well as the participation of local people and its impact on cultural memory, were evaluated. Participant observations were also conducted to examine the festival from a gastronomy tourism perspective. The study concluded that local participation in the International Antep Pistachio Culture and Art Festival was high and that these traditions were revived within the city as part of the Gaziantep identity, with a particular emphasis on food-related events after 2014. The festival was found to contribute to the promotion, sustainability, and preservation of culinary culture and to lay the groundwork for the International Gaziantep Gastronomy Festival, which began in 2018.
