 This study aims to examine how two dominant ney performance styles in Türkiyeclassical and arabesqueare perceived by listeners, and how these styles influence musical taste. A total of 148 university students at Karabük University, none of whom had formal music education, listened to two ney improvisations performed in these styles. Participants were asked to express which improvisation they preferred and explain their reasons in an open-ended written format. The data were analysed quantitatively based on preference rates, and qualitatively through content analysis. The findings reveal that most participants favoured the arabesque style and justified this preference mostly with emotionally driven concepts such as tranquillity and calmness. On the other hand, the classical style was less preferred and was particularly criticized from a musical perspective. A noteworthy outcome of the study is that a significant portion of the participants did not or could not use any thematic or musical concepts while expressing their opinions.

 Bu çalışma, Türkiyede ney icrasında hâkim olduğu düşünülen iki farklı üslûbun klasik ve arabesk dinleyiciler tarafından nasıl algılandığını ve bu üslupların müzik beğenisi üzerindeki etkilerini incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Karabük Üniversitesinde öğrenim gören, müzik eğitimi almamış 148 üniversite öğrencisine bu üsluplarda icra edilmiş iki ney taksimi dinletilmiştir. Katılımcılardan, beğendikleri taksimi ve gerekçesini açık uçlu bir metinle ifade etmeleri istenmiştir. Veriler nicel olarak beğeni oranları üzerinden değerlendirilmiş; nitel olarak ise içerik analiziyle çözümlenmiştir. Bulgular, katılımcıların büyük çoğunluğunun arabesk üslûbu daha çok beğendiğini ve bu tercihi çoğunlukla huzur, sakinlik gibi duygusal temelli kavramlarla gerekçelendirdiğini ortaya koymuştur. Öte yandan, klasik üslup daha az tercih edilmiş; özellikle müzikal açıdan eleştirilmiştir. Katılımcıların önemli bir kısmının beğenilerini ifade ederken tematik ya da müzikal kavram kullanmamışkullanamamış olması dikkat çekici bir sonuçtur.
