Abstract:

The goal of this research is to determine to what extent adolescents parentification experiences and cognitive flexibility levels predict their burnout levels. The study group of the research consists of 224 54 female and 191 46 male high school students studying in two state and two private high schools in the 2022-2023 academic year. The relational survey model, one of the general survey models, was used as the research model. In this study, Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient and stepwise regression analysis were used in the analysis of the data obtained from a total of four measurement tools: Personal Information Form, Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Form, Parentification Scale Adolescent Form and Cognitive Flexibility Scale. As a conculusion of the analyzes made for the sub-dimensions of burnout, it was found that perceived unfairness from parentification and cognitive flexibility predicted burnout. Besides, in the regression analysis, it was specified that cognitive flexibility, parent-focused parentification, and perceived unfairness from parentification predict depersonalization. Finally, it was concluded that cognitive flexibility, parent-focused parentification, students grade point average and sibling-focused parentification significantly predicted high school students academic efficacy levels. Obtained results are discussed within the framework of the literature.
