Abstract:

Unlike the private spaces of the individuals living in the cities, the public space is the spaces where they exhibit the whole of their relationships in their daily life practices with no pressure. As well as its spatial aspect, this phenomenon, which is the scene of interaction rituals, is also explained as the spaces where the social, cultural, political, economic, and ideological conflicts of the individuals who produce and consume the space are experienced. The public space, which has the role of both subject and object with its feature of shaping the city and the individual who is articulated to it, is constantly changing through urban indicators. This study sheds light on the process of shaping the new state ideology's public space following the Republic's proclamation through urban areas in the city of Van. It also examines how the city of Van, whose population was displaced and turned into a ruined place, especially after the 1915 events and the subsequent Russian occupation, was reproduced with the proclamation of the Republic and how it was built on which images/signs. In addition, the study focuses on transforming new spaces such as Cumhuriyet Caddesi (Cumhuriyet Street) into areas where ideological conflicts are experienced and discuss the factors that caused the change of this street, as well as the story of its foundation.

Çalışma Van kentinde Cumhuriyet’in ilanı ile birlikte yeni devlet ideolojisinin kentsel mekânlar aracılığıyla kamusal alanı şekillendirme sürecine ışık tutmaktadır.
