Abstract:

Abstract: The Future of New Media in the Context of Radical Democracy Theory: ‘The Case of Wikileaks'

This study has been prepared with the purpose of putting forth radical democracy's relations with the world of communications, where radical democracy is considered as an alternative democracy project to post Marxism and which puts at the forefront the understanding of pluralism. As with the right to be different, the individual as well as becoming the interrogator of his rights and the communication channels considered as the provider of optimum balance between the individual and the state as the protector of order, gain importance in particular. Because genuine democracy rests on the presupposition that it can only be realized through rational discussion of politics and through communications. The unambiguous meaning of this is that under conditions where there is no ideal communication in the relations between citizens and the state, a genuine democracy cannot be said to take place. Removing the claims that democracy is insufficient can only take place with the participation in the decision mechanism of citizens through communicative processes. The most important characteristic of the media is that, while democratic administrations ‘possess administrative performances of public legitimacy' and in order to provide the said legitimacy, the media becomes the necessary basic source for citizens in accessing and benefiting from its power of influence. In particular, ‘the performances of the new media' has gone beyond society's limits of time and location and has once again put the concept of ‘radical democracy' on the agenda. In the context of the relations between the individual and the state, it has made it an investigative object of democratic theories and dialogical sufficiency. The revelations by the new media channel named Wikileaks that has resounded throughout the world is the most concrete example of this. This study has adopted as a method the information debated on how the said revelations and the interventions that followed were perceived by states and citizens. Since this process presents us important clues as to how the new media and thereby democratic politics (which doesn't look too bright due to interventions), which is in need of rational debate and channels of communication, will be in the future and its relationship with this new media will be explored. In this context, in our paper that has examined the effects of Wikileaks (as an example of optimum balance's most noncontroled new media example), media and literature analysis; hermeneutic evaluation has composed this paper's method. Possibility, this paper's conclusion will show us Wikileaks's process will be a beginning of West's intervention against new media.
