Abstract:

The current study aimed to detect differences in respect to operational functions: planning, flexibility, performance monitoring, inappropriate responses and working memory, between those possessing suicidal thoughts and those who have made suicidal attempts. The actual study sample included 56 individuals, all of whom were clinically diagnosed with depression and had medical files at the mental health hospital in Jeddah. The researcher randomly selected the sample using the following tools: Suicide thinking scale, Tower of Hanoi test, tracking test, working memory test, Benton optical retention test, as well as the Strobe test.
After carrying out the necessary statistical analyses, the results of the study indicated that there was a statistically substantiated difference in respect to operational functions (planning, flexibility, performance monitoring, discontinuation of inappropriate responses and working memory) at 0.01 between suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts, in favor of suicidal thoughts.
The current study therefore recommends the need to pay attention to the programs related to the development of executive functions among those of suicidal thoughts, in addition to those who have made suicidal attempts. Further research should also be carried out in the Arab environment in general, on the variables of the current study, upon similar clinical samples. That is in addition to reaffirming the necessity of studying the impact of both emotional regulation strategies and executive functions upon suicidal behavior.
