Abstract:

Among the aspects of the inimitability of the Holy Quran, of its amazing eloquence, and of its rhetorical style is its exquisite metonymies. These appear in their Quranic contexts as unique images with their precise language and their outstanding and charming styles. They have captivated the attention of scholars and researchers who have excelled in analysing their meanings which have acquired the highest ranks of beauty and greatness in their senses and aims. We will deal with the touch of eloquence in the Quranic image of metonymy as depicted by one of such scholars, the Imam Al Zamakhshari. We will analyse extracts of his texts and some of his analyses of this phenomenon. He stressed that all the metonymies included in the Holy Quran had been highly appreciated because they bear powerful meanings with art and beauty, taste and subtlety, decency and courtesy. These will be used to show his specific artistic view of this exquisite image of eloquence.
