Abstract:

In the short story titled How Wang-Fô Was Saved, extracted from the collection Oriental Tales by Marguerite Yourcenar, the author unveils the fate of the characters, which is conditioned by their encounter with the artwork. Wang-Fô, a master painter, initiates his disciple Ling into beauty and shows him the magic of colors. This encounter is capable of engaging the being in a process of transformations to free them from all forms of materiality. It also has the virtue of enchanting or even saving the being by guaranteeing the creation of another world where the watchword is undeniably beauty. A form of artistic spirituality thus replaces materiality. The work also presents another character, the Emperor, who, lacking a true encounter with art, fails to develop an aesthetic gaze and consequently falls into disenchantment. Parallel to this, the work subtly informs about another encounter, as important as that of art: the encounter with writing. This encounter reveals the author's ingenuity in wielding the verb to create another form of artistic beauty, the beauty of the literary text.
