Abstract:

Edip Cansever, one of the original poets of modern Turkish poetry in terms of use of images, used flower images a lot and in different ways in his poems. The flowers he uses most in his poems are as follows: Rose 40 times, cloves 16 times, violet 14 times, poppy 8 times, hyacinth 6 times, begonia and tulip 5 times each, basil, geranium and oleander 4 times each, Judas tree, lilac and daisy 3 times each, daffodil, orchid and lily 2 times each. Although the mentioned flowers are mostly used as images in poems, they are also sometimes used as symbols. The use of bellflower, mountain flower, wild flower, coquina flower and lemon flower, which we do not often encounter in classical Turkish poetry as images even though they appear only once, shows that flowers are used with a very rich connotation in terms of diversity in Cansevers poems. Besides, it is seen that the type of flower is not specifically stated in Cansevers poems and is only used as flower 64 times. All of these reveal that flowers are used with a special preference in Cansevers poems in terms of their range of connotation. It is also very striking that flowers are not used in a cliché way and thus their meanings are expanded. It is seen that common flowers images in Cansevers poems are mostly used with negative connotations, unlike Classical Turkish poetry. In special flower uses rose, carnation, violet, etc., we can say that when they are used as symbols, they are similar to those in Classical Turkish poetry and have a positive connotation and when they are used as images, they are far from cliché and are often used with a negative connotation.
