Abstract:

Migration has been among the events that have affected peoples lives socially, economically and culturally throughout history, and Anatolia and the Balkan geography have been among the regions most affected by migrations. Çeşme, one of the most important districts of Izmir, was one of the places where immigrants were settled. At the same time, after the 1923 Turkish-Greek Population Exchange, which can be described as the largest migration movement of the Republican period, migrations from the Balkans to Anatolia and specifically to Izmir and Çeşme, continued for a long time. These migrations took place in the 1930s and the immigrants settled in Çeşme generally came from Kos Island, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria and Yugoslavia. The state has taken many measures to ensure that these immigrants can become productive after they were brought to Türkiye safely, and efforts have been made to settle the immigrants in regions with similar conditions to where they came from. Because of that, the state provided the immigrants with all kinds of agricultural tools, seeds, foodstuffs and harness animals, and built immigrant houses where they could meet all their needs, aiming for the immigrants to live without needing help. Çeşme was one of the regions where the said policy was implemented, and especially in the newspapers of the period, there was a lot of information about the immigrants settled in the district. This article is about the migrations from different Balkan countries to Çeşme in the 1930s, about which there is very little information in the literature, and the measures taken for the immigrants settled in the district.
