Abstract:

The neighborhoods that spread in different cities of the Ottoman Empire, constitute the basis of socio-cultural life. Individuals create an identity by being influenced by the culture of the neighborhood they were born in, get involved in social life, and preserve social values by transferring their neighborhood identity to future generations. Traditions, customs, and daily habits that are formed as a result of the mutual interaction between neighborhood and individuals provide continuity by feeding specific structural and cultural features of the neighborhoods. Based on this inference, the aim of the study was determined as the detailed evaluation of the physical and sociocultural characteristics of the neighborhoods in the classical age of the Ottoman Empire in the historical process. For this purpose, this study evaluates the Ottoman neighborhood through the physical and social environment that formed the sociocultural structure after briefly mentioning the development of the neighborhood in the historical process. Besides, the study aims to reveal an up-to-date, collective work by addressing the historical, physical, demographic, socio-cultural elements in the traditional Ottoman neighborhood and the ways these elements interact with each other.
