Abstract:

In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Ottoman state navy remained rather weak compared to the foreign state navies. In particular, the strengthening of the navies of England, France, Italy and Russia enabled the Ottoman Empire to attach importance to this issue. However, the economic situation of the state hindered this development. During the Second Constitutional Monarchy, the authorities sought to raise awareness of the public about the navy, with the help of the press, and collected aid. The Navy Journal is one of the newspapers that publishes the most on this subject.
Navy Journal started its publication life in 1910 and included many political, military and social issues. In the journal, many writers expressed their ideas about how to strengthen the Ottoman navy. In addition, many articles have been written about foreign state navies in order to explain the importance of the navy. The authors of the Navy Journal conveyed the information they obtained to the public, especially by following the foreign press. In this study, detailed information about England, France, Russia, Italy, Greece and the American navies that later joined the alliance were emphasized.
