Abstract:

From marine sediments of Hatay a juvenile specimen of Myctophum formosum RÜCKERT-ÜLKÜMEN, 2001 with well-preserved head and tail is described. M. formosum is compared with the closely related recent species M. punctatum from Turkey. Both species occur in deep sea and possess photophores. Typically, the mouth is very broad and the upper jaw reaches behind the eye. Furthermore, the fossil species M. dorsalae, M. licatae, M. columnae and M. sauvagei are compared to M. formo - sum. The Globigerinae present in the same layer are partly very porous and indicate a Miocene age. The genus Chiloguembelina is known to occur up to the Upper Oligocene (LOEBLICH et al., 1964: C654); thus, the examined layer is herewith dated asOligo-Miocene to Miocene.
