Abstract:

Artists who transform their lives with the instruments of art have revealed their selves in a language unique to them. The unconscious, metaphysical, supernatural and surreal elements that are among these modes of expression are some of the ways symbolist artists frequently use them in explaining their world. Odilon Redon is one of the artists who use symbolic images in his paintings by integrating them with existential philosophy in a surreal atmosphere. In the imaginary worlds, the common images of the unconscious, and in his works that he creates based on dreams and extraordinary states of consciousness, the artist enables the human being to question everything that appears including himself. Expressing his inner world with different and striking elements, the artist uses surrealistic and symbolic images in his works. Analyzing these images and the hidden meanings in the images he uses also explores the mysterious world of the artist. For this reason, this research aims to evaluate the works of symbolist painting and printing artist Odilon Redon, who left deep traces in the history of art, the images he uses in his works, the symbolic meanings of these images and the semantic dimensions of all these images in the audience.
