Abstract:

The first institution related to the emergence of official institutions for the protection of public health in the Ottoman Empire was the Majlis-i Tahaffuz, which became official in 1838. Since the purpose of this organization, which gained an international character after 1840, was to protect the country against infectious diseases from outside and to take the necessary precautions, it did not have a positive effect on general public health. Besides, XIX. Since the 19th century, opening up to the West in health institutions draws attention. XIX. At the end of the 19th century, the lack of a hospital in Balikesir Liva, a province of Hüdâvendigâr Province, caused the patients to suffer, and there was a great need for hospital and medicine. The construction of Gureba Hospital, which is the first official hospital of Balıkesir, started in 1889 and was completed at the end of 1894. This hospital started to accept patients in 1891. After that, a new hospital will be built because the hospital cannot meet the needs of the day and is not enough for the public. In the transition to the Republican period, health institutions were given great importance. When Mustafa Kemal Pasha established the first GNAT Government in Ankara, he first of all emphasized the importance of the publics health and a Ministry was established to carry out this service. This Ministry, which is in the Cabinet under the name of Ministry of Health and Social Aid, continued its existence and provided successful services even after the Republic was proclaimed. The aim of this study is XIX. century and XX. Researching Balıkesir hospitals in the first half of the 20th century and examining whether these hospitals meet the needs of that period.

Osmanlı Devletinde halk sağlığının korunmasına yönelik resmi kurumların ortaya çıkışı ile ilgili ilk kurum 1838de resmiyet kazanan Meclis-i Tahaffuzdur.
