Abstract:

This study investigates the spatial narration methods applied by the contemporary Romanian poet Radu Vancu in his poems on the conception of death. The symbolic meanings of the thematized spaces and their relation to one another will be examined as the textual space is an important part of Vancu’s writing style that plays a significant role in the structure of his poems. The main techniques can be described as follows: a) To interweave the spaces, b) to use spaces with contrasting qualities, c) the suppression of a space by another, and, d) the comparison of the same space in different moments. The symbolic meaning of the narrative spaces, the scene they present and the composition they create play a crucial role on how the conception of death and suicide are shaped in the poems.
