Abstract:

Idioms have attracted the attention of linguists for a long time. These idioms have been examined in different areas of linguistics such as stylistics, lexicology, syntax. Although idioms have not been discussed independently in these studies, classification of idioms and the terminology used, formed the foundation of phraseology. Especially, the work of “Traité de stylistique française” (1909) by Swedish linguist Ch. Bally is regarded as an important milestone for the development of phraseology. Formation of phraseology, as an independent branch of linguistics, started with the works of V. V. Vinogradov in 1940s. Vinogradov has identified the principles of phraseology by classifying the different types of idioms in a systematic manner. This classification has been recognized in many languages. Many researches developing Vinogradov’s opinions have been conducted between 1960 and 1980. In this study, the development of phraseology in Russia will be examined in chronological order and will be discussed in detail. Vinogradov's classification and different opinions about phraseology will be provided as well.
