Abstract:

Ottoman history is frequently have been the theme in recent Turkish traditional television series. In these series, the history of the Ottoman Empire is presented to the audience as a fictional narrative in the form of different characters and plots, from its foundation to its rise and collapse. These productions are predicted to define the concept of Ottoman and they mythologize it at the same time. Based on this prediction, the studys primary problem is which myths come to the fore at the level of discourse, narrative, and discourse in domestic TV series on Ottoman history and which accompany this construction. Among the domestic history series, Kuruluş Osman and Diriliş Ertuğrul series were selected as the sample group. The mythic elements in these series were analyzed in relation to the existence of an Ottoman myth rising in the present. The studys theoretical framework is based on Roland Barthes semiotic approach and Mircea Eliades myth-making processes in terms of structure, origin and characteristics of myths. Within the framework of these two approaches, the findings on how mythic elements were used in the series analyzed through semiotic analysis, evaluated in the context of mythic codes, and interpreted through a qualitative analysis. As a result of the analysis, it is observed that mythical elements are included in these series about Ottoman history, and the Ottoman myth is constructed in the present time with the meaning created by these codes.
