Abstract:

The support Islam accorded Ijtihād on secondary issues in the religion underscores the suitability of Islam for all times and places. Ijtihād means making efforts to deduce laws from the sources of the Sharī'ah (the Qur.ān and Sunnah) for contemporary issues. The one who is saddled with this responsibility is a scholar who possesses the qualities of al-Ijtihād. The eligibility of Ijtihād is determined by manifestation of some attributes in the Mujtahid (scholar). One of the most important among these attributes is proficiency in Arabic language, which is the consensual position of scholars. However, opinions differ as to what level of competence in Arabic language is required of a Mujtahid. This research sheds light on this matter by meticulously discussing it. It brings forth different opinions, discusses them and gives preponderance to some of them based on their authentic sources.
