Abstract:

Disciplines that have a long historical background such as painting, sculpture and architecture evolved into a medium that communicated with and complemented one another beyond traditional expressions and presentations in the dynamic art environment of the twentieth century. As a result of the interaction among these art disciplines, the object of art gains meaning through the site it is placed in. The frame was removed in painting while the base in the sculpture was lifted and art spread across the space. In the new art concept in which the traditional boundaries dissolved, the concept of site specificity in art arose. The transformation of place, which started with the international surrealism exhibitions during the 1930s, matured with the idea of site-specificity that emerged in the 1960s and 70s. Since this period, site-specific works have become apparent. American artist Sandy Skoglund is one of the artists who produces artworks in this context with imaginary spaces that she creates entirely. The artist has an art practice based on taking pictures of holistic and unrepeatable arrangements by fictionalizing the site with art objects. The fact that Skoglund's work loses its material aspect, consists of fictional spaces and cannot be updated elsewhere, overlaps with the basic principles that make up Site-Specific Art.

In the article, Skoglund's art practice is explored in detail and the dialogue between her work and the site is dealth with in the context of Site-Spesific Art. In the research, the formation process of Site-Specific Art is shortly discussed, and the artworks of Skoglund are examined drawing on selected art-historical examples. After collecting resources within the literature review, one qualitative research technique, document analysis is employed. This study is hoped to be a reference for those artists who are interested in Site-Specific Art which is a contemporary art discipline, and to help them to overcome the conceptual and practical shortcomings experienced in this field of inquiry in Turkey.
