Abstract:

On new media platforms, individuals are able to express themselves freely without supervision and control. At this day and age, there are many different social media platforms and networks that have been generated for free self-expression. These platforms all have different qualities, features and variations that have created a competitive environment, trying to get users’ attention. One of the newest features of most popular social media platforms has been that the users can now broadcast live by using online mediums. Live broadcasters who use such social media platforms do not even need to make any financial investments for their production since these platforms are brought to users at no costs or fees. There is no need for a studio, technical equipment or professional staff as only as little as mobile phones or tablets are adequate for anyone to go live. Live social media broadcasting and streaming have been found to be popular amongst both the youth and the mid-aged adults. New media live streaming is not completely free or uncontrolled. There are a few platforms where live broadcasts and digital content are moderated by content viewers and regulated via the help of the users of the platform. Nevertheless, the gatekeeper of the traditional media that exist even at the most liberal and democratic environments do not easily show presence in the new age social media platforms. This article discusses and compares a variety of new media live streaming platforms by analyzing relevant literature, common live broadcasting practices and ongoing debates through a critical approach.
