Abstract:

Considering the civilizations which are divided into two as Eastern and Western, it is clearly seen that the West has left the East far behind in terms of Science and Technology in historical process by reenforcing the imported innovations from the East that once had been scientifically and technically superior to the West. Inheriting the Eastern and Islamic culture, Ottoman Empire had established its sovereignty over vast lands for hundreds of years, but especially after late 17th century, Ottomans fell behind in Science and Technology and in spite of the late efforts, they were not able to move with the time. In this study, assessments are made by both comparing scientific and technological mindsets and the development process between The Ottoman Empire and the West. Besides, it is emphasized that the influence of the East remained at the roots of the western developments and Ottomans were not totally oblivious to science and technology contrary to regressive view of history. This study also examines why The Ottoman Empire fell behind the western innovations. With this literature research, it is aimed to obtain a perspective on the scientific and technologic development process of both Ottomans and The West.
