Abstract:

Through the lens of ecocriticism, this article explores the theme of environmental justice in contemporary American ecofiction. First, it delves into various facets of environmental justice as portrayed in ecofiction, including matters affecting immigrants, underprivileged individuals, communities, and societies, cross-border and intragenerational concerns, ecological justice challenges arising from natural catastrophes, and post-catastrophe recuperation initiatives. Recognizing these characteristics facilitates a deeper understanding of the ironic and contradictory relationships between polluters and those affected, thereby emphasizing the seriousness of environmental justice concerns. This analysis highlights the endeavors of ecociders to benefit from environmental injustices intertwined with political, cultural, and economic dimensions. Moreover, it investigates the environmental injustice perpetrated by those who devastate the environment and the environmental degradation caused by exploiting environmental injustice, thereby creating a vicious cycle. A critical examination of selected ecofiction pieces dealing with economic marginalization, ecological abuse, and the impacts of environmental injustice on vulnerable groups, communities, cultures, nations, and generations in this context unveils how dominant, hegemonic, and even repressive narratives manifest themselves within eco-victims of environmental injustice through fabricated paradoxes and how these narratives place them in a position of accepting environmental injustice. Because environmental injustice and destruction are inescapable in work and living conditions, eco-victims who object to this situation face challenges in forming any structured, politically articulated resistance. Moreover, this study underscores the paradoxical connection between eco-occupiers and eco-victims, illustrating how not only do the instigators of environmental injustice erase their traces but also how eco-victims are compelled to engage in or contribute to environmental injustice and natures devastation, at times willingly and at other times inadvertently.
