Abstract:

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine that began in 2022 was met with opposition from nations of the European Union, among which Germany is in the forefront. Russias military operations targeting Ukrainian land led many nations to issue military and economic sanctions. NATO and the European Union positioned themselves against Russias ongoing military operations in Ukraine, with financial, political and cultural sanctions. On the other hand, due to Germanys dependency on Russia for energy, and its current energy policy, Russia has responded with counter sanctions and threats. The long-standing energy trade between Germany and Russia came to the attention of public opinion. This study, will present a general overview of the public opinion on German-Russian relations through memes about Germanys energy policy and its effect on relations with Russia. Through the humorous content generated and shared on social media, comedy portals and internet forums, it is possible to see how the tensions between Russia and Germany are reflected in the public opinion regarding political economy relations, thus revealing an up-to-date picture of what the Russia-Germany energy crisis looks like. In this study, content analysis will be conducted using memes, and the underlying meanings of the images used in these memes will be analysed using the semiotic method.
