Abstract:

At the time of the First World War, there was no absolute homogeneity of any ethnic community in any region where the Ottoman Empire ruled. Nationalist movements first emerged in the Balkans, and non-Muslim “millet”s established independent nation-states one after another. The religious bond was still the most potent unifying factor for Muslims. However, the competing “nationalist” construction processes with reference to local languages resulted in Muslims turning to separate paths, just like the ethnic communities in the Balkans. The option of parting ways with the Turks, with whom they had been in common destinies for hundreds of years, became evident for the Kurds, both with the efforts of some Kurdish elites and with the encouragement of Western states. In this article, the interaction of the founding cadres of the Republic with the Kurds, after the War of Independence, which preceded the establishment of the Republic of Turkey, and during the First and Second Assembly periods, was examined. The study, which started by dealing with the relations of the Kurds with the Committee of Union and Progress, focused on their contributions to the War of Independence, their representation in the Parliament during and after the war, their uprisings and official reports evaluating these uprisings.
