Abstract:

Electricity, the use of which has increased rapidly in European countries since the end of the 19th century, started to be used in the Ottoman Empire in the same century. Throughout the empire, electricity was first used in the Ottoman navy, in the cinema, in the transportation of telegraphs and mail, and in the field of health and medical equipment. By the 20th century, the usage area of electricity has spread considerably. Due to this spread, many people have attempted to benefit from electricity. These initiatives were mostly carried out in the form of lighting with electrical machines. As a matter of fact, the empire did not remain indifferent to this demand and offered electricity to the public as a public service. Thus, the end use of electricity has been realized as public service. This service, on the other hand, was implemented by private entrepreneurs in the first years of the empire, as it was in the last years. With the proclamation of the Republic, one of the initiatives for the nationalization of electricity, which was brought under the control of the national capital within the framework of the nationalization policy, took place in the city of Urfa. In this context, in this study, in which all kinds of developments related to electricity in the city of Urfa are evaluated, the Prime Ministry Republican Archive, the Prime Ministry Ottoman Archive, local newspapers and research and analysis works have been used.
