Abstract:

The diversification after Caliph Othmān’s murder during his caliphate has crucial importance for being the prelude of first political manifestation of Ahl al-Sunna which will be called later as the mass crowd (sawād al-aʻzam) of Islamic society. In this study, what has been examined is the transformation of early Othmāniyya which means “to believe that Othmān was murdered outrageously and this must be avenged” to latter Othmāniyya which means “to believe that the caliphate of Abū Bakr, Omar, Othman and Alī are valid and legitimate”. This study, in which Othmānis in primary cities of Islamic world and their thoughts attempted to be projected, concludes with the statement of Othmāniyya that Jāhiz systematised. Hence the conception of Othmāniyya did not have the features to become an independent sect, it melted into Ahl al-Sunna and totally disappeared in the fourth century of Hegira.

The diversification after Caliph Othm?n’s murder during his caliphate has crucial importance for being the prelude of first political manifestation of Ahl al-Sunna which will be called later as the mass crowd (saw?d al-a?zam) of Islamic society.
