Abstract:

The ring is one of the signs of authority and power that kings and politicians chose from early times. The Muslim Caliphs followed that tradition of Prophet Mohammed (PUH) who chose a ring in which his name and status (as prophet) were engraved. The Caliphs followed the Sultanic tradition and choose official and personal rings on which they engraved eloquent expressions of faith, dedication and submission to God and reflected their steadfast dedication as defenders of the faith and protectors of the people. The expressions also expressed the Caliphs' views on matters of life.
This study focuses on the engravings on the rings of the Ummayyad Caliphs from two dimensions: The first studies the religious, cultural and artistic meanings of these engravings, as well as the styles and types of engravings. The second dimension traces the location of the rariois rings of the Caliphs and provides a scientifically documented and verified list of these rings and their locations
