Abstract:

The Reformation was a religious, social and political movement initiated in 16th century Europe as a reaction against the authority of the Roman Catholic Church. This process led to radical changes in Christianitys history, reshaping the religio-cultural landscape of todays Europe. Therefore, the Reformation was more than a religious movement; it was a turning point that radically changed Europes social, political and cultural structure. During the Reformation period, Protestant reformists criticized the institutional structure and theological doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church. One primary criticism was the Churchs doctrine of interpreting miracles as a manifestation of its own perfection, and presenting saints and their relics as ongoing sources of miraculous events. Leading reformists rejected these claims as running contrary to the Bible. They interpreted miracles within their own paradigms. Martin Luther, for instance, regarded them as an indication of Gods power, associating them with faith. Huldreich Zwingli attributed an allegorical meaning to miracles that focused more on their moral and spiritual messages. Similarly, John Calvin added a more profound meaning to miracles, and accepted them as a sign of Gods sovereignty, arguing that they were limited to the Apostolic period. He differed from Luther by stating that while miracles occurred in the past to affirm Gods message, basing faith on miracles was no longer appropriate. Therefore, these reformists lacked a consensus on miracles by criticizing and rejecting the Churchs understanding of them. Regarding the sacrament of the Eucharist, an important miracle according to the Roman Catholic Church, Luther argued that Christ was physically present in the Eucharist, while Zwingli interpreted this presence symbolically. Calvin, on the other hand, evaluated Christs presence in the Eucharist spiritually. Concerning the possibility of miracles today, Luther believed them to be possible, albeit unnecessary for salvation. However, Zwingli argued that miracles no longer occurred. Calvin aligned with Zwingli, asserting God remained active in the world not through miracles, but through the Holy Spirit. These differences are important, as they reflect each reformers theological approaches, their commitment to Christian tradition, and their interpretations of sacred texts. Over time, however, these followers of these reformers formed distinct theological schools e.g., Lutheranism and Calvinism, each offering myriad understandings of miracles. By examining how Reformist texts approached miracles, this study seeks to shed light on their impact on the Christian understanding of miracles. Furthermore, no comprehensive study in Reformation theology has explored the concept of miracles or the views of early reformers on this topic. To address this gap, the present study explores how leading reformers conceptualized miracles and how they understood their theological significance. Specifically, it examines the impact of these thinkers on the Christian understanding of miracles. This study contributes to the theological corpus on the Reformation and offers insight for interdisciplinary and interreligious scholarship aimed at understanding diverse perspectives on supernatural phenomena. It occupies a significant place in the literature by analyzing the influence of the reformist ideas on modern Christian theology and practices. The reformers understanding of miracles will be subjected to a phenomenological comparison. The study will also employ a sociological approach to understand the periods social structure, and the extent to which belief in miracles influenced it. In particular, the study will examine the reformists efforts to interpret Biblical miracle narratives and to transform texts into a doctrine. This study is primarily based on theological sources from the Reformation period and the writings of leading reformists. The article also aims to clarify the meaning of the concept of miracle within Reformed theology and to assess the extent to which early reformists interpretations align the traditional Christian understanding. As the first academic study in Türkiye on this subject, it is expected to lay the groundwork for future research. Moreover, comparing how leading reformists understand miracles is crucial for grasping the depth of theological debates during the Reformation, and how different interpretations of Christianity were shaped. This comparison also sheds light on the diversity of Reformation-era theology and the evolution of Christian approaches to miracles. The study finds both similarities and differences in the reformists understanding of miracles. These differing approaches make the Christian concept of miracles more universal by placing it within a historical and theological framework, thereby enriching the existing body of theological and philosophical literature on miracles in Christianity.
