Abstract:

Summary: The importance of tombstones can be summed up in three essential points: the content of the texts inscribed, the style of the calligraphy and the decor. What interests us most in this research is not the texts or the style of calligraphy, but rather the decoration of the steles and their symbolic meanings.
However, the late-stage Muslim artist paid more attention to Arabic calligraphy as a decorative element, Inspired by his subtle letters, beautiful decorative patterns, This is clearly evidenced by many of the Hegira 12th .s.Ap. Jc).
As for the decoration of the steles, the use of Arabic calligraphy widened and developed more and more during the ages after the IVth century of our era, From the simplest form to the most complex has from the 6th, s, Ah to the 12th, s, ac until it became a purely decorative element between the 7th, century of the hegira until the Ottoman era.
As for the decorative elements that adorn the tombstones of the central Maghreb, they are very diverse in their forms, their linear, symbolic and astronomical patterns, characterized by plants which dominate the late deciorate system of the Ottoman era, then on meeting some geometric patterns very modest at the end of the fifth century Hegira, on the tombstones of the Kalaa of the Beni Hammades. from the seventh century on the meeting also new decorative forms, such as architectural architecture (arches and others) carved on the Ziyanid stelae. Finally, the symbolic patterns which are represented particularly by anthropomorphic forms in the Ottoman era, and other elements, such as cypress, crescent, turban and others.
During this long journey through the different historical eras, the craftsmanship of the funeral steles of the Central Maghreb, did not cease to evolve in a remarkable way until the end of the Ottoman era, where it was reached a very remarkable level of sophisticated development, in terms of form and typology as well as in terms of their decor.
