Abstract:

In the economic history, there is no agreement on in the discussion of the re-emergence of cities in Europe in the Middle Ages, although various arguments are put forward. In this study, the issue of the emergence of cities in the feudal period in Medieval Europe is discussed from the perspective of economic history. H. Pirenne's view that the said development was shaped by the revival of trade is generally accepted in the literature. M. Dobb generally accepted Pirenne's theses and made some secondary contributions. On the other hand, it should be taken into account that there was no state institutions at the local level due to the absence of a central authority in the conditions of the period. In this context, M. M. Postan made a contribution to the "issue" by revealing that independent and disconnected feudal authorities provided the emergence of cities by granting political and institutional (legal) privileges to merchants. Considering the current scientific findings on climate, these contributions should be considered as classical but incomplete readings from the perspective of economic history. In this study, which is a type of compilation, a method was followed by examining the secondary sources related to the issue, evaluating the findings from a theoretical perspective, and then presenting the results.
