Abstract:

Van is located in eastern Turkey and is on the North Anatolian Fault Line and is therefore a province with a significantly high earthquake risk. Due to its location and geographical structure, Van has been exposed to natural disasters such as floods, avalanches, landslides and especially earthquakes throughout history. The 7.2 and 5.6 magnitude earthquakes that occurred on October 23 and November 9, 2011 were a turning point for the city. These earthquakes caused loss of life, injuries and extensive material damage, and deeply affected city life. This disaster not only affected Van, but also brought calls for international aid. Economically disadvantaged families living in low socio-economic neighborhoods who could not migrate had to spend the winter months in tents and were even more exposed to the effects of the earthquake. This study aims to examine from a scientific perspective the pre-earthquake preparation processes of economically disadvantaged individuals living in the suburbs of Van, their post-earthquake experiences, and how they interpret earthquakes and other natural events. The research, conducted as a qualitative field research, focuses on married participants who experienced the Van earthquakes and received help from social solidarity foundations. By conducting in-depth interviews with 28 participants, the research investigates the preparation processes of poor families before and after the earthquake, their disaster experiences and how they evaluate earthquakes. The findings of the research show that groups in economic distress face difficulties in taking the necessary precautions against disasters and generally accept their fate.
