Abstract:

The Parapompé of the Emperor and His Army in the North-West Asia Minor

When writing on the crisis in the 3rd century and the numerous military campaigns with the concomitant increase in demands on cities for supplies, scholars regularly refer to a number of inscriptions from Prusias ad Hypium which are meant to confirm and illustrate this increasing burden on the cities. These inscriptions mention that the persons commemorated undertook a parapompé. This term is held by some scholars to denote a whole package of services ranging from the provision of food for the army to the entertainment of the emperor. The authors go to show that this interpretation of the term parapompé lacks positive confirmation in the sources and that the contexts in which this term was usually used call for an interpretation closer to its basic meaning of «escort».
