Abstract:

The
Ottoman Empire weakened after the 18th century against Western modernization
applied a number of political reflexes to re-establish its former power. One of
the political reflexes preferred by the Ottoman Empire was Islamism. At this
point it is important to address these issues: With the aim of enabling Ottoman
Empire’s prosper and progress against West, what kind of identity conceived
with Islamism, what kind of identities imagined with the result of the identity
conceived, how the identity conceived was built, finally how theoretical debate
would be conducted on the identity wanted to build. Therefore, the issue of how
the identity of Islamism was built and how that identity caused imagining of
local and religious identities and furthermore how that identity could be
related to ethno-symbolism approach which is one of the national identity
theories will be examined in this study.
