Abstract:

This article is concerned with the political situation in Egypt and Syria during the Crusade of St. Louis IX in 1248 and with the effects of the campaign on Muslims and its political results. Ayyubids, who were dominant in Egypt and Syria in this term though considerably away from the glorious days under Salahaddin Eyyubi, were in a bad situation in political and the economic terms, nearing the edge of collapse. The French King of the time, who wanted to benefit from this opportunity, marched over Egypt after a decree had been made about the necessity of a new campaign at Lyon Council in 1245. As a result of the intense battles between the two parties, French Army was defeated and St. Louis was captured especially by means of the remarkable endeavor of Bahri Mamluks led by Baybars al-Bundukdari. After a short time, however, he was set free in return for a ransom. Despite this political achievement and victory, Ayyubid Dynasty could not save its dominance over Egypt and thereupon, Bahri Mamluks, who had already gained reputation for the victorious achievements that they displayed during the battles, took over the power from the Ayyubids.
