Abstract:

Simony, a concept used to express the purchase or sale of religious offices or authorities in exchange for money or material benefits, has been an important topic of discussion in the history of Christianity and has left deep marks on both the internal structures and external relations of the Church. The term is derived from the Latin word Simon and takes its name from Simon Magus, who is mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles in the New Testament. Simon Magus is known for attempting to purchase spiritual power from Peter with the desire to possess the same abilities as Jesus disciples. Simoniacal practices emerged from the early Christian period and continued to exist over time. Although it originated in the early stages of Christianity, the limited possibility of acquiring material gain through spiritual offices initially prevented simony from becoming widespread within the Church, and it was regarded as a rarely encountered phenomenon. However, when the historical process is examined, it is observed that as the Church became economically prosperous and gained social prestige, simoniacal practices also began to spread in parallel. While not initially perceived as a serious problem, this practice gradually became a disturbing issue for the Church due to its increasing visibility and influence, and it came to be regarded as a significant institutional problem. Especially in medieval Europe, it became one of the most significant issues undermining the legitimacy of religious authority in the history of Christianity. This situation eroded trust in ecclesiastical authority, paved the way for Reformation movements, and led to divisions within the Christian world. Efforts to prevent simony were made through Church councils, Papal decrees, and Reformation movements. One of the main problems that compelled the Church to take action was the existence of simony and political interference in the elections for the papacythe highest office in the Church. The money and gifts given in exchange for offices varied greatly depending on the prestige and economic power of the position. During this period, large sums were paid for high-ranking positions such as the papacy, while even lower-ranking church offices required a certain financial compensation. In addition to money, jewelry, valuable items, mansions, palaces, and large estates also became part of simoniacal transactions. In Catholic belief, the Pope is considered infallible in his declarations on matters of faith and morals under the principle of ex cathedra, and he is believed to be chosen under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, the election of a pope through simony has led to the questioning of his religious authority not only from ethical and moral perspectives but also in terms of divine legitimacy. Understanding the historical roots of simony and its course in Church history, and evaluating its effects on the institution of the papacy are important for the study of Christian history. In this study, the historical background that paved the way for the emergence of the concept of simony and its scriptural foundations in the Gospels are first examined. Then, simoniacal practices that became widespread during the Middle Ages and the payments and gifts given in this context are presented through historical examples. The economic impact of the commodification of spiritual offices on both local church economies and the financial policies of papal authority is evaluated through case studies. In this context, the economic dimension of simony is emphasized in this study. Finally, the effects of these practices on the Church are assessed. Although simony was prohibited by past council decisions and papal regulations, it continues to be regarded today as a practice incompatible with the fundamental principles of the Christian faith. This study aims to contribute to the existing literature on simoniacal practices in Church history within the field of the History of Religions.
