Abstract:

adventure, horror, science-fiction, and romance novels for Turkish readers from the late 1950s and early 1960s to the 2010s. Although the contributions of these two translators in the field of popular literary translation are undeniable, they have been subject to heavy criticism by both readers and professionals in the Turkish literary field for omitting andor shortening parts of the source texts or not translating them properly. The aim of the research is to discuss the transformative role of the translations by Gönül and Gülten Suveren in the Turkish popular literature field . At the same time, although Suveren sisters were criticized for the translation strategies they used, it is aimed to reveal that the publishers they worked for and the market conditions are also crucial in some of the decisions they take regarding their translations, as well as their own translator habitus. To this end, this paper aims at questioning the reasons behind the textual interventions in their translations, external factors such as the market conditions of the period in which they translated, will be examined as well as internal factors such as their personal life and pereferences. Keywords: Gönül Suveren, Gülten Suveren, Suveren sisters, Popular translated literature in Turkey.
