Abstract:

This study examines the difficulties encountered by women residing in temporary shelters following the 2011 Van Earthquake and the alterations and modifications in their daily routines. The study uses the interpretive-constructivist approach to comprehend womens evolving and transformative experiences following the earthquake and identify the specific challenges they encountered. Theories utilized in the study are Lefebvre and Harveys spatial theories for physical and spatial qualities in the temporary shelter spaces and Berger and Luckmanns social construction of reality for the changetransformations of daily life. The study involves conducting in-depth interviews with 32 purposefully selected women using the snowball method. The data collected from the comprehensive interviews have been systematically categorized into five distinct groups physical attributes of temporary shelters, experienced fears, heightened care and workload for women, solidarity and tension in terms of assistance and support, and the impact of the earthquake on womens daily lives and social relationships, have been then analyzed within the established framework. According to the findings of the study, women have experienced various problems due to physical and spatial conditions in temporary shelters, various fears, care of the elderly, disabled, children, and sick people in tents, and being a woman in receiving assistance. Furthermore, as a result of the alterations and shifts in everyday life and social interactions following the earthquake, it has been concluded that circumstances such as heightened work demands, gender role preconceptions, apprehensions regarding theft, harassment, and so forth resulted in significant challenges for women. In light of these challenges and obstacles, recommendations are put forth to enhance the well-being of women in the aftermath of disasters like earthquakes, alleviate their anxieties, and alleviate their burdens.
