Abstract:

Abstract: The relationship between historians and historical documents is a central concern in contemporary historiography. Documents are primary sources for reconstructing the past, yet they are not neutral; they may reflect political, social, or ideological contexts that introduce bias. Historians therefore act as mediators, applying critical and analytical methods to assess, contextualize, and reinterpret documents. This process transforms raw archival material into refined historical knowledge that balances subjectivity and objectivity, a necessary condition for scientific writing.
The study highlights the importance of historical criticism, the role of different historiographical schools in classifying and interpreting sources, and the dynamic interaction between documents and historians. Ultimately, it underscores the historian’s essential role in producing a more coherent and transparent narrative of the past.
