Abstract:

The ancient city of Iuliopolis is located on the Skopas River Aladağ Stream in Gülşehri Mevkii, Çayırhan District of Nallıhan District, 123 km northwest of Ankara. Most of the city was flooded by the construction of the Sarıyar Dam in the 1950s in the area formerly known as Sarılar Village on the banks of the Skopas River Aladağ Stream. The archaeological excavations by the Ankara Museum of Anatolian Civilizations in 1991 and continuing in 2009 and beyond have revealed much about the citys Late Antique and Early Byzantine history. A large part of the city was submerged under the dam lake, and the necropolis, fortification walls West, church, ancient road west of the necropolis, and many architectural plastic artifacts were uncovered through archaeological studies and surveys. The bridge, determined to have been built during the Byzantine period, the breakwater promachon to the east of the bridge, most of the city walls, and civil, social, and public buildings were submerged under the dam waters. The necropolis, the bridge, the church, and some of the streets have been identified, while the locations. Apart from the Roman walls, streets, and some tombs in the necropolis, no comprehensive study has been made of the remains of the citys buildings from the Late Antique and Early Byzantine period. This study examines the structures and findings of the Late Antique and Early Byzantine periods identified in the archaeological excavations in 1991 within the framework of the citys historical process. This process of the city was interpreted through epigraphic texts, small finds, architectural plastic artifacts, and structures and dated in the light of analogical data and findings.
