Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to reveal the effects of shanty houses, cooperative, private, and public housing productions on the spatial development process of the city. The new neighborhoods created by the slums built for the housing need caused by the increasing forced migration in the 1990s, the neighborhoods where TOKI residences built after the 2011 earthquakes, and the newly opened neighborhoods have guided the development direction of the city and led to the emergence of new axes. In addition, with the bringing of Van to the status of Metropolitan Municipality in 2012, the fact that all the villages of the city center are the central neighborhoods of the city has changed and expanded the urban area boundary. With this demographic change movement, the rural character of the city has been further strengthened, but there has been no development in the urban sense. The study was conducted using the qualitative research method and according to the results: The urban area boundary has changed as a result of the housing production activities that have affected the spatial development process of the city of Van, such as migration, earthquakes, and being a metropolitan city. In this context, the changing social, economic, and physical characteristics of the city were evaluated in this study.
