Abstract:

Otherness; It is a concept used in many fields such as literature, philosophy, sociology, psychology, anthropology. The word derived from the root other is interpreted in the context of adjective or pronoun types in linguistics. The other signifies a being outside the subject. Otherness, on the other hand, is a concept used to highlight the central one in the comparison of two elements. The word other is generally preferred to express the situations of being far away and in the other direction. When we look at the historical development process of otherness, it is observed that different approaches are formed. Otherness, the first examples of which are encountered in Ancient Greece; we and they are perceived against its backdrop. We the civilized Greeks; they are used to describe non-Greeks. When it comes to the Middle Ages, otherness often comes to the fore with a religious quality. In the 19th and 20th centuries, otherness; It follows a course of development in political, ethnic and sociological contexts. Today, besides the political nature, there is an understanding of otherness on the ground of civilizations. It is observed that in the otherness, where a patronizing understanding was dominant at first, a competitive style was adopted later on, and an assimilationist approach was adopted in the recent period. Otherness; It is evaluated on the basis of separation / separation in terms of cultural, linguistic, political, ethnic and religious aspects in relations between individuals and groups. In this study, otherness is discussed in the axis of various identities of which the individual is a member.
