 تعد العقوبات الدولية أحد عوامل التأثير في العلاقات الدولية، وتستطيع أن تسهم في أحيانا في الضغط على الدولة سواء في توجيه سياستها الداخلية أو الخارجية. ومن ثم يتوقف نجاح تأثيرها على عدد من العوامل في إطار عملية ديناميكية تسعى من خلالها لتقييد سياسات الدولة المفروض عليها تلك العقوبات، وقد عرفت العلاقات الدولية تلك الوسيلة منذ نهاية الحرب العالمية الأولى التي كانت تشمل عقوبات سياسية في المقام الأول، وبدأت تتسع تلك العقوبات لتشمل العقوبات الاقتصادية بجانب السياسية مثل الحالة العراقية بعد الغزو العراقي للكويت أو الحالة الإيرانية في اطار سعيها لامتلاك قدرات نووية لأغراض غير سلمية أو دعم بعض جماعات المعارضة لنظم حكم إقليمية، إلا أن في بعض الأزمات مثل الأزمة الروسية بدءا بالأزمة الجورجية مرورا بشبه جزيرة القرم وصولا إلى الأزمة الروسية مع الغرب بسبب الغزو الروسي لأوكرانيا عام ٢٠٢٢‏، والتي كانت من تداعيتها التوسع في تلك العقوبات لتشمل العقوبات الرياضية والاجتماعية، وهو الأمر الذي قد يسهم في الحد من تهديد الدول للسلم والأمن العالمي.
                  International sanctions are one of the factors influencing international relations, and they can sometimes contribute to putting pressure on the state, whether in directing its internal or foreign policy, and then the success of their impact depends on a number off actors within the framework of a dynamic process through which it seeks to restrict the imposed state policies. These sanctions have been imposed on them, and international relations have known that method since the end of the First World War, which included political sanctions in the first place, and these sanctions began to expand to include economic sanctions as well as political ones, such as the Iraqi case after the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait or the Iranian case in the context of its quest to possess nuclear capabilities for the purposes of However, in some crises, such as the Russian crisis with the West, starting with the Georgian crisis, passing through the Crimea, reaching the Russian crisis with the West due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, whose repercussions were the expansion of those sanctions To include sports and social sanctions, which may contribute to reducing countries' threat to global peace and security.
