Abstract:

Change and progress are those themes that philosophy and social sciences give point to. The effort to understand the historical context in which communities are located and to predict where we are heading by understanding the dynamics that make up this historical phase, is a widespread tendency across philosophy and social sciences (especially in sociology). In this context, Critical Theory and pragmatism have an important place, among the schools that are dealing with change and progress. Critical Theory and pragmatism are in effort to understand the historical conditions that make up the society in which they are found. The aim of understanding the change and the changing one, frequently appeared in the texts of two school thinkers. In the meantime, both schools had a "critical" attitude towards the ultimate futuristic conception and they were not willing to accept “absolutist” philosophies of history. However, while Critical Theory, especially Horkheimer and Adorno, aim to leave behind the progressivism and keep the dialectic (it’s logic of contradiction), pragmatism has maintained an optimistic idea of liberal progression. The goal of the present article is to compare the evaluations made by Critical Theory and pragmatism on change and progress, and thus to reveal the similarities and the differences of both schools about stated themes.
