Abstract:

The studies of classical period sociologists, including Comte, Spencer, Durkheim, and Weber with some certain typologies, were mainly shaped in a positivist or evolutionist line. Conflict theory, which emerged as a reaction to evolutionist and equilibrium approaches, pioneered by Marx, claimed that the process of transition to a classless society would be reached as a result of successive stages, based on conflict and struggle. At this point, it can be said that in the first period of sociological thought, in which modern society was modeled, change was seized as an evolution from a simpler and more primitive one to a more complex and advanced one. The subject of social change has continued to occupy an important place in the contemporary theories and approaches such as cyclical, structural-functionalist, neo-conflict, and neo-evolutionist, which focus on the problem of the functioning of society, through this positivist and evolutionist heritage. Social change has also become one of the important fields of study in conservative thought, which emerged as a reaction to modernity and liberalism, and has taken a considerable place in sociological thought from Burke to the present. In this study, the thoughts and approaches of Tocqueville, Durkheim, and Weber, who are thought to have impacted the development of conservative thought, and Burke, Kirk, and Nisbet, who were the leading names of the conservative tradition, will be examined through the concept of social change.
