Abstract:

The numerical records kept until the 19th century, when censuses were carried out to determine the population directly in the Ottoman Empire, were made for tax purposes. Therefore, the exact determination of the population of the empire is possible by examining the tax records. In this sense, the poll tax registers kept exclusively for tax purposes for non-Muslims are important for the interpretation of the population. In the Tanzimat period, tax records began to be kept more frequently for a fair tax system. The poll tax registers, which was kept in Alaiye after the Tanzimat, is such a register, and actually has the characteristics of a population register since it records the entire male population. A detailed critique of the notebook will reveal the number and socio-economic status of the non-Muslim population in the Yukarı and Aşağıkilise neighborhoods in Alaiye. In addition, studies on the Muslim population in Alaiye will be completed.
