Summary
The current wave of Arab recognition of Israel and normalization of relations with it constitutes the most extensive phase in the history of Arab-Israeli relations in terms of its geographical scope, encompassing countries from the Maghreb, Africa, Asia, and the Arabian Gulf. This was clearly evident in the normalization agreements signed between Israel on the one hand, and the United Arab Emirates and the Kingdom of Bahrain on the other, known as the “Abraham Accords.”
Despite the controversy surrounding the religious dimension of the name, the most important aspect of these agreements lies in their political and legal content, far from any real religious connotation, as their use of religious dimensions is seen as a symbolic ideological tool that serves a specific narrative within Zionist thought and its allies, rather than an expression of actual religious content.
Furthermore, the “Abraham Accords” are not a sudden moment or an isolated diplomatic breakthrough, but rather a natural extension of a long normalization process that began in the 1990s, when Israeli trade offices were opened in a number of Arab countries, such as Oman, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and others, This followed the signing of the Oslo Accords in 1993 and the subsequent establishment of the Palestinian National Authority under the Gaza-Jericho Agreement in 1994.
This phase was accompanied by a wave of general Arab optimism, during which there was a belief that the Oslo Accords would hold and pave the way for the establishment of a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders. This perception was reinforced by Shimon Peres's thesis on the “New Middle East,” which was seen as a project to close the files of the conflict and open up prospects for development and stability through joint regional economic and development cooperation.
