Abstract:

The aim of this study is to determine the factors that cause physical violence conducted by spouses / partners against women aged 15-59 years in Turkey. In this study, the micro-data set of the Research on Domestic Violence against Women in Turkey conducted by Hacettepe University Institute of Population Studies in 2014 was used. Ordered probit regression analysis was used in the study. In cases where the category of the dependent variable is more than two and when there is a natural order among the options, ordered qualitative preference models are used. The dependent variable of the study, measured on an ordinal scale, was the frequency of physical violence, which consisted of the categories “who have been subjected to violence many times”, “who have been subjected to violence several times and less” and, “non-violent”. According to the results of the model, the factors that affect the physical violence of women are woman's age, relationship status, welfare level, suicidal ideation, suicide attempt, residential area, the number of rooms of the woman's house, spouse’s / partner’s taking drugs, drinking alcohol, involvement in physical violence, education level and, working sector. In order to identify and eliminate the factors that cause violence, it can be ensured that the media and institutions work together in a common aim and create sensitivity on violence in the society. In this way, taking precautions in our country and in the world as soon as possible can prevent more women from being exposed to violence. Violence against women is a violation of human rights and disregarding this issue should be accepted as a crime. In order to provide women with the right to a healthy life, societies need to be raised. Awareness raising on violence can be increased by organizing awareness programs on domestic violence by enabling women and their spouses / partners to participate together.
