Abstract:

In the 2018 survey of the Byzantine settlements around Alacadağ area of the Lycia region, at the mountainous area in the north of Demre Myra District of Antalya Province, we identifi ed a small Byzantine settlement in the area of Köte in the Göynük District of the Belören Village. Th e settlement is built on a rocky area on a small hill and consists of a church, two workshops, six houses and fi ve cisterns. Th e Byzantine period is a typical example of small villages in the rural area of the ancient city of Myra in terms of settlement features.Th e buildings we have identifi ed in the Byzantine settlement of the area of Köte in the Belören Village shed light to the rural life of the early Byzantine period, with their original native architectural forms that have been reached without any distortion until today. Th is type of settlement, which consists of agricultural terraces, workshop/dwelling place, housing, cistern worship place and grave, is quite common in the region. Th e people living in small communities close to each other survived with the products they obtained from agricultural areas near settlements.Th e fact that settlements in the region have been settled uninterruptedly from the ancient times until the end of the Byzantine period makes it diffi cult to date the structures. Historical and architectural data shows that Myra has reached the highest level of rural population in the mid-6thcentury. Th erefore, we are of the opinion that the settlement we found in the area of Köte is a typical example of small villages in the mountainous area of the ancient city of Myra at the 6th-7th.
